Phonies
So in my English class, we are reading Catcher in the Rye. Now, to be perfectly honest, I very much dislike it at this point. The main character is like a shell to me- too relateable that the character is able to be adapted to everyone in one way or another. But none the less, I am still able to connect to it, meaning that this book applies to too many people because I like to think of myself as a little extraordinary. Now Holden has a problem with phonies, as he calls them. Though I call them fakes, they are very similar creatures. People that lie to you, please you for personal gain later, make themselves out to be something they obviously are not, or become your friend for selfish reasons are fakes in my eyes. Now I know this is very ubiquitous (ba-bamb vocab word) for people to be fakes, but it saddens me that it is so ubiquitous. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I am not a fake. I am real. I try so hard to not cross the line to being a fake, but I admit it's hard because it's only natural to have people want to like you and such. So, my question is: Where is the line to being a phony versus real? I'm pretty sure I know, but the world has been disconcerted (ba-bamb another vocab word) into thinking everything is surreal and fake, when in fact it's real and here. So be real, guys. Be real.
